What are you doing Saturday, May 1st 2010??

What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDx SelfDesign High, where x = independently organized TED event.

At our TEDxSelfDesign High event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

This Tedx is hosted by SelfDesign High in Nelson, BC Canada.

Our Theme
The theme for TEDx SelfDesign High, as decided by the Y-U-M Team, is Co-Inspiring the Future.
Having a theme gives our speakers a focal point, something around which their diversity can orbit.
Co-Inspiring the Future will run beneath everything surrounding our TEDxSelfDesign High event. It is our goal.
We hope you are just as excited -by the promising possibilities held in those four words- as we are.

Audience

If you have looked around this site, checked out posters, talked to people, started to get excited; you might be thinking you want to attend the TEDxSelfDesign event. Now you may have noticed that we never talk about where to buy tickets. That's because you can't buy tickets. There are no tickets, there are no fees. It is free to attend the TEDxSelfDesign event. There two important factors though.
1) Only 100 people can attend. 2) If you want to be one of those 100 people you must ask. There will be a guest list.
If you would like to attend, to be on that guest list, please send the Y-U-M Team an email at yuminitiative@gmail.com.

See you there.

Music Review: The Unicorns

The Unicorns:

Cross-fuse a mystical fairy-tale creature, three French boys from Montreal, Quebec who decided to create an indie-rock band in Campbell River, British Columbia who then released a record and subsequently received raving reviews from online media sites and magazines only to tour under stage names for thirteen months straight crossing continents such as Europe, the United Kingdom, North America and Australia to finally ending with, "I quit, I can't do this anymore” and, inevitably you will end up with an ironic, sardonic, strangely iconic, firecracker band with a fuse that fizzled out before any real explosives happened.

The Unicorns! a band that broke up tragically too soon. And their sound? I won’t lie, their sounds good if that’s what you’re in all of this for. It’s not exactly bubblegum rock-pop but it’s in there, and it’s not exactly Japanese techno but there are whisperings of it humming around. Thin root voices and warm ghost harmonies, catchy tunes and reminiscent riffs with lyrics that probably mean something to somebody somewhere.

As is the creature, so is the band, now merely a legend. Luckily, you can still listen to them here:
